Where art Thou Family Man?

Sep-3-2008 By Family Man

Wheres Waldo?Lately if you have visited my blog, you might be thinking that you are playing a game of “Where’s Waldo”.  It is a very tough and often double edged sword.  One the one hand, my absence of blogging has caused some visitor attrition.  On the other I have been busy trying to figure out how to get my life in order, and that takes a front seat to “pleasure blogging”.

So first, I have to apologize if you have either left a comment or sent me a message that I have failed to reply to.  I know it’s in poor taste, but I will be replying this week.  Second, I hope to get a chance to visit the blogs I read faithfully, and comment myself.  And I want to add some new ones to my reading list.  I also have some emails to respond to, which I hope to do this week.  I have continued to, though slowly work through what will at some point become the new look for this site.  I have some of the basics done, but I was recently hired to set up two sites that are going to generate some income so those need to come first.  I did put up a countdown timer for the anticipated launch of the new site.

Financially I am in the same boat as before, and have begun the process of facing the music.  We made the necessary and often hard decisions, and have also begun to face the poor ones we made in our home, and will begin the painful process of trying to dig out of debt.  It has been a painful process for my wife, and is ongoing but I keep trying to keep her focused on the prize if we can pull our lives together.  In doing some research I am actually amazed at people who have literally lost it all and come back, but that is a different post for a different time.

Family wise the boys are back in school and both had a good first day yesterday.  We also got some exciting news on Friday that it would appear our legal fight over the two older children is coming to a close, and that all will be shortly resolved.  We did get the court documents that changed their names, and that brings us one step closer to the finalization of all of it.  That is one chapter of my life I am looking to close.

I do plan to post more this week, and someday hope to get back to more daily posting.  But for now I am doing what I must to build tomorrow.

The life around me

Aug-26-2008 By Family Man

Me and Little DudeIt been hard to be so absent from blogging lately.  However, there are other priorities right now.  I plan to get back to more regular posting over the next few weeks.  So what has been going on?  Finally my wife has faced the reality that we are in the red each month by close to 2500 dollars.  And I have made the realization that I can’t borrow from Peter to pay Paul, because neither one ends up happy.  Bankruptcy is on the table, though only as a last resort.  In many cases I have gotten the impression I may be able to work out some more favorable payments by direct negotiation with some of our creditors.  As most of our debt is unsecured, they seem that they would rather work with us than get nothing.

The reality has been a tough one for my wife, and she has been alternating on angry and depressed, and how we can take care of what we need to do.  Only time will tell.  It has been a very difficult week but one that has been coming for a long time.

We are in countdown mode for school to begin.  We as mom and dad are very ready, yet the children are not.  We are also beginning to seriously discuss our living situation after this school year ends.  We are contemplating downsizing a bit to a townhome, closer to where I work, stores, and the kids various doctors and activities.

“Little Dude”, the moniker our littlest one has adopted has begun solid food, and loves it.  We in fact can’t feed him fast enough for his nightly rice cereal.  He has also gotten crawling almost down.  It’s both exciting and sad how quickly they grow.

On the more serious front, Jason AKA “Aslan” has decided to move on to other projects.  He was helping me out for a while, and has been our weekly moderator for Way Back Wednesday.  He and I remain friends outside of the blogging world, but he has decided to work on some other projects full time.  He hopes to return next spring, and I will be glad to have him.  I will however be continuing the Way Back Wednesday here myself.

So I hope you will continue to come here, and be patient with some of my sporadic posting here as a step away slightly to deal with the real world.  I will be back on a more regular basis soon.

Tales from the road 08′-The First Three

Aug-13-2008 By Family Man

The First three days have come and gone. And of those three days we have gotten on each others nerves, gone out to eat, gotten sunburn, and watched it rain. Rain. A lot of it. Downpours. So take a family of five and stick them inside on a no debt vacation (meaning little going out), and it can be a boiler for tempers. And it has been. But there have been some good memories. To me that is the most important. So not comes the reality that when I get back home I need to begin to face our financial situation much more seriously. I have been doing some work on a second business but with anything it’s a learning curve, and that too will take some time as well.

I look at this vacation as well as others and realize what severe debt can do to your ability to enjoy the life around you.

So in addition to my sunburn I got some reality. And that’s the first three.

Tales From the Road 08′-Getting there

Aug-11-2008 By Family Man

One thing you figure out when you travel with three children is that even the best plans often the best plans don’t always go in your favor.  The other really big outcome for me was to realize that maps tend to be a bit misleading when it come to figuring out distances.

Our original intention was to leave very early Saturday morning, visit some family members at what we thought was the halfway point, and then complete the second half of our trip in good time.

Our actual achievement was not as we had hoped.  Not only did we leave hours after we had anticipated, and then the short visit went on until the wee hours of the night.  It seemed the finally leg of our journey took forever.

Now of course being on a vacation, where money is an object, everyone is overtired, and the place has not been quite as we expected, it has been a somewhat stressful first 24 hours.

So here we are in Florida, excited for the pool, and it has both afternoons since our arrival yesterday. Today at least we are all speaking, unlike yesterday.  I while trying to relax do constantly think of all of the debt, and the down, finding it hard to snap out of.the overall funk I have been in.  All I can do is hope that as the days go by my mood will get better.

So far my wife has been unimpressed with our facilities.  One thing we did not realize is that we are in the middle of the city.  In addition many of the amenities, that we were promised, are not quite as promised in the brochure.  So my wife has decided to make it her goal to complain and find a better location.

While the kids are overall a both disappointed in the weather and such it is a bit stressful, as when you are under stress,  little thing tend to frustrate you.  So in the end I need to find a way to unwind a bit in order to relax myself.

And that is today’s “Tale’s of the Road 08’”. Please come by tomorrow to find the latest in the current saga that has become our summer vacation.
