For this weeks Way Back Wendnesday I thought I would dempstrate a theory that many things in history, and the world son’t change and seem to be revolving in a circle. In this case I am talking about the Presidential Election.
This year our economy is in shambles. People are loosing their homes at a recod pace. The etimates are 1 in 5 people will declare bankruptcy, and that 1 in 4 will loose their home this year. The economy is shrinking, and people are seeing high unemployment, high inflation, and poor sentiment.
Do you think I described 2008 well? Well that also describes the same issues as the 1980 election. The only difference? The president that presided over that economic meltdown was a Democrat. It makes me realize that party doesn’t matter as much as support, and the ability to make people feel confident.
So for this week, no snappy punch lines. I am presenting to you 10 different videos. Four of them from the 1980 election, and four from the 2008 election. One attack ad each, and one promoting the candidate. You decide, have we really changed much in 28 years?
The Presidential Election of 1980 (Democratic Incumbent Carter vs. Republican Reagan*)
Jimmy Carter (1980)
Ronald Reagan (1980)
Reagan won the election in a landslide.
The Presidential Election of 2008 ((Republican Incumbent Bush) Republican McCain vs. Democrat Obama)
John McCain
Barack Obama
As you can see only the technology and faces have changed. Also the sitting party has changed but the issues remain the same. So what does this tell me? That the party doesn’t really matter. They can both srew it all up. Hope this makes you think. As an “undecided”, I can only hope for a better tomorrow, and that whomever wins helps everyone “Build Tomorrow, Another Day of Life”

Thanks for the comparison. It was interesting to see that the more things change the more they stay the same.
One of the big differences now though is the internet. The hatred and vilification that pours forth there is way beyond what was seen in other elections.
It’s so interesting that no matter how much changes it all stays the same.
