The weekend is upon us and fast approaching. While I do love the weekend it is extremely frustrating to not be able to do much of anything, due to our family finances. Our hopeful summer vacation is most likely off the shelf, and may not return for the foreseeable future. But at the same point though unavoidable we have to learn to pay the price for our finances. I do mostly feel bad for the kids. I do however remain hopeful that within a year by next summer we can again take the family vacation.
The markets are still on a roller coaster ride, with sweet crude breaking yet another record of $142 a barrel. Most think it will hit $150, before it begins to drop. That alone is a big squeeze for families. That coupled with the phone call I got that the newly “fixed” car is now acting up again, has really gotten me feeling pressed.

I can sympathize completely. My husband isn’t able to do anything this summer anyway because of the killer project he’s on, but we aren’t doing anything on his rare days off and my daughter and I are doing very little because of the crunch. My income drops to unemployment in the summer. Then there’s the gas thing. And my daughter’s 16th birthday party in July. And my son’s wedding in August. To be able to swing those….here we sit. We are going somewhere next year….there’s just a lot of dissent over whether Mom and Dad should spring for the family (son, his wife, and baby by then, daughter, and her boyfriend, and maybe the grandparents) to go to the shore OR should Mom and Dad actually get to go somewhere by themselves to celebrate their 25th anniversary. I wish we could do both.

Now you need to find creative at home and near home vacations. Put up a tent in the backyard. Look on the internet for local attractions that kids might like. It doesn’t have to be bad. We did a lot of that when my kids were little and we didn;t have much. They still comment on how good those times were. Of course, we didn’t have the in ternet to help.
