Yesterday was the baby’s Dedication Ceremony. We had the event in our backyard. Other than a 5 minute downpour the weather cooperated beautifully. It was exhausting but fun. The baby had a good time as did all fo the kids. I am tired. I am luckily back at work where I can relax a bit. We did have both sides of the family present which can always make for some interesting events.
My family and my wife’s family together can be an interesting event. My wife and I both being the “Black Sheep’s” of the family always do end up being the ones stuck in the middle. If you stand back and watch, it’s kind of like the Clampetts meeting the Howells.
Most of my family are form Pennsylvania and north. My grandmother comes form money, and my grandfather can from upper class Pennsylvania. Most of my wife’s family is from Rural North Carolina, and rural Maryland. (Yes there was a rural Maryland). So the difference in both thought and culture can make for a mismatched afternoon.
When it comes to my Father-in-Law he can be the most interesting. Especially as he gets older. The baby’s Godfather who’s company works with his a lot, says he is missing his “edit button”.
The edit button. It’s something we all have. As a thought goes from our minds to our mouths, we have this internal edit button that filters the words we speak before they exit our mouths. It generally scrubs out all the potentially mean, or off color things we may be thinking at the time. It also prevents many of us from getting ourselves into deep trouble with our spouses.
So as Rich says my father-in-law is missing his edit button. Even yesterday there were a few times everyone in the room stopped to look at him after he would say something that the majority of the room was a bit concerned about. And of course he would look around and ask, “What? What did I say?”. Even my mother-in-law had to tell him a few times to stop talking. And Godfather would merely look at him, laugh, and say aloud, “Edit Button”.
I often think my life would make such a funny reality TV show. Or a really sad one. Anyway Another Day of Life has gone by ans we are all still standing. Edit buttons, and lack of and all.

Sometimes the only thing one can do after a family gathering is rejoice that you survived. But you still love them all.

My mom and her husband both seem to be missing their “edit buttons.” Sadly, so does my 15 yr. old daughter, but I chalk hers up to the self-centered teenage years combined with the impulsiveness of A.D.D. And I can pray she will grow into her edit button.

As are my kids. I think the edit button comes with age. I think it also sometimes sadly dissapears with age.
