When Do I get a day off?

I met the family for my “Birthday Dinner” last night.  We did that (it is my only birthday present) BTW.  When we got home our older child wanted us to order him a video from Amazon, that is hard to find.   We said that it would be fine.  He could give us the cash and we would order the item.  At this point he says, but don’t you owe me like $100?

Now both children used to get an allowance that I honestly thought was overly generous. I finally felt they were old enough to learn to “earn their keep”.  So when our 13 year old cam out with that statement, I looked at him and asked him why he thought I owed him anything.

Well he said “We haven’t gotten out allowance since October”.  I pointed out that even if they old allowance was in place it was more like $40, not $100.  In addition I advised him that we are living on a “Pay for Performance” schedule now.  And asked him what it was he did to help around the house.  He doesn’t even turn his clothes right side out. There was no response.  So this morning as I got the laundry together I took all his clothes that are inside out (almost all of them), and dumped them on the floor.  So he will get to spend his morning cleaning his room and putting his laundry together correctly.

Maybe I am a mean father, but I know I am not a maid….
