Britney is serious news!

Jan-31-2008 By Family Man

I am oh so tired of Britney Spears, Sam Lutfi, and Lynne Spears.  Her world has become such a freak show, it’s like watching a train wreck unfold in front of you. In fact the tabloid website TMZ.com as of this morning dedicated 9 or their 15 front page posts to the real world soap opera that is Britney Spears.  Even MSNBC, and CNN thought it news worthy enough to have it on the front page, though CNN decided against a picture caption, just making it item #1 on the latest news.  I would have thought the Showdown over the Stimulus Bill would be bigger news. Instead we get really awesome video like this as our top news.

Seriously.  How about all of the citizens out there struggling to make ends meet, or at least something relevant.  I don’t think I will ever understand why someone like Britney Spears is front page news.  Is her mental meltdown front page news?  Will it even remotely affect me at all?

Ok I do feel bad for her, and hope she gets the help she needs, but do I really need to see it on every news outlet?  If it’s really that important of a news item, I think our news editors really have too much spare time on their hands.

Way Back Wednesday

Jan-30-2008 By Aslan

I was talking to Family Manyesterday and he was discussing a site he just joined as it relates to his debt.  We were also talking about some upcoming projects we may have going, when the conversation turned to our younger days.  Both of us started talking about the upcoming “Build Tomorrow” award, which we are in the process of designing, and somehow got on to the topic of the special series he did last August called Now and Then.  Knowing him for as long as I have I know he just scratched some of the surface, so I hope he will consider going into it further later on.

With that discussion, “Way Back Wednesday” was born.  Each week we will be bringing you something from a past era when life seemed simpler.

So for this “Way back Wednesday” enjoy a trip to the 80’s.  That’s when air travel was still civil, and luxurious, and TV was still family oriented, always had “very special episodes”, with a moral and a message, and could be campy all at the same time.

Remember Pan Am:

How about everyones favorite family, The Keatons:

Or the School Teacher turned Superhero with the help of the “little Green guys”:

And that is Way Back Wednesday for this week!

To protect your family and your finances during these very uncertain times, it is critical that you batten down the hatches and prepare to ride this out. One critical way to do that is by tackling your credit card debt.

I didn’t spend my whole evening watching the “State of the Union” last night.  For one I am not much for long politically based speeches.  Much of the meat and potatoes can be caught on the 11 o’clock news.  Second, I as well as most Americans have our opinion on the state of the union….shaky.  At least from the aspect of the average Americans pocketbook.

I did have it on in the background on CNN.com, and heard many of the key points.  I noticed Iraq was played down quite a bit.  I am really tired of hearing about the Iraq debate.  It’s so easy now to any armchair general or anyone else to debate should we or should we not gone there.  And it’s way too late to decide we shouldn’t.  And as much as folks say we should just get out, we can’t.  It’s too late for that.  The mess is made, and now we have to stabilize it.  Do I think we should have gone there?  Probably.  Do I think we rushed in? Yes.  Do I think the government planned it well?  No way.

Now I am sure someone disagrees with that assement, so I support your first amendment rights:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

I did listen a little more closely to his economy section.  The economy is hurting right now, as well as the average middle class family.  I support his stimulus plan, and applaud the house, for acting so quickly.  Even Nancy Pelosi, who I find to be really annoying, and the first to blame everything on the president supports his plan, and encouraged the plan, and the bipartisanship the house demonstrated to pass it.  Now the Senate can muck it up.  It seems that they would like to.

I think the things they want to add are great, but I think we need to push through what we have and deal with the social security and unemployment extension separately.

John McCain was unusally subdued in his response.  he didn’t seem to have much feedback other than this quote.

“I may have given a little more urgency to getting this stimulus passed immediately.”

What I really found childish was the remark Hillary made after the speech.

“Tonight is a red-letter night in American history,” Clinton said. “It is the last time George Bush will give the State of the Union. Next year, it will be a Democratic president giving it.”

Wow, are we in second grade?  I am not a Hillary fan.  I am actually not really a fan of any of the candidates on either side of the aisle.  When can we have some real presidential candidates?  Will one please raise their hand? Obama’s statement was not quite as childish.

“Tonight was President Bush’s last State of the Union, and I do not believe history will judge his administration kindly.”

History is strange.  It has a habit of looking at the more positive things a president did over time.  For example Herbert Hoover.  As time passes he has gotten credit for the positive things he did, and less of the blame for the depression seems to fall on his shoulders.

Now I don’t love George Bush.  I think he got in way over his head, and his lack of grasp of the English language makes his seem all the less presidential.  But he stands by his decisions, good or bad.  I also liked President Clinton.  I hate the things he did as a person, but his policies as president were very moderate for a democrat.  I tend to lean conservative myself, but always vote for the platform and policies, not the party. I fear the election for the next president will be decided by who the american public feels can do the least damage.

Last night could have been a moment for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to demonstrate the civility they say we need in our politics, but they failed.  They were seated within a few seats of each other, but wouldn’t speak to each other, and actually made it pretty obvious they were ignoring each other.  In addition much of the standing ovations the president gets are traditional, and have very little to do with the speech or the president.  Barack Obama, if you watched decided to sit.  Yeah we get it you don’t like the president.  The standing ovations are tradition, so thanks Obama for thumbing you nose at them.  Seriously, it’s like a second grade classroom.  Oh wait, second graders are better behaved.

I can't hear you...LALALA

Parties and the State of the Union

Jan-28-2008 By Family Man

No not the State of The Union as delivered by “W”.  More like the state of the union at our house.  This weekend was party weekend, where the kids and my wife got to party like rock stars, and good old dad got to carry presents and all the other fun things.  Everyone though had some fun.

My wife is now getting to that “We need these necessities” stage.  Ointment diapers, and all that in between.  I am apparently the perfect “first timer” as I am being called, as I focus on things like bag packing and car seats.  So of course all of the women at the shower got a little chuckle at dad’s expense.  That’s fine with me though, as this is my first “baby” experience.

I was surprised on Saturday morning to see that my wife’s “baby Belly” had dropped down, and she seemed to be carrying the baby lower.  I do know from my past EMT world, that means he has turned himself head down, and is beginning to think about venturing out into the world.

Wil had a blast at his party saying it was the best one ever.  He had a lot of fun with his friends however he did begin to falter towards the end as he was only feeling about 90%.

We did however begin yet another round of problems with my in-laws.  They unfortunately don’t like it when we say no to something they want.  The initial plan was that the men, being myself the two boys, my father-in-law, and brother-in-law, and his two boys could come to our house and just hang around while the baby shower was going on.  That however was not I guess exciting enough, so my mother-in-law took it upon herself to ask the kids to go bowling.  We had wanted the quiet day for the kids, as Saturday was a big day with the birthday party, and they had both been home from school all last week with the flu, and wanted to ensure they were ready for today.  So when it was brought up Saturday night when my wife went to help set up for her shower, she explained this to her parents.

Yesterday comes and so does a call from my father-in-law, saying fine I’ll take them to the movies and shopping.  So of course when my wife explained again that we wanted them home as they needed to finish their make up work, and be ready for Monday, he took it upon himself to berate her over the phone.  He got her so upset she started crying, which at this point make the children (both the 8..err 9 year old, and the 13 year old) cry, and become very upset.  And when the shower was over, and I went to load up the stuff, and the car it was evident, they are going to punish us by not speaking to us.

So far I have stayed quiet about it all at my wife’s request.  Though I think it is time for me to step in.  If the relationships have become this toxic, I have to watch out for my wife and children first.  That is my State of the Union.
